The United Way of Southern West Virginia is pleased to welcome our first official member of the Alexis de Tocqueville Society.  Named after the 19th Century French nobleman who admired America’s unique spirit of volunteerism to assist people in need, the Tocqueville Society stands behind the belief that individuals prove to be the real impetus for community impact through their compassions, commitment and generosity.

Deb Della Mea Swanson embodies the concept behind the Tocqueville Society.  Deb served as the director of the United Way of Southern West Virginia in the 1990’s, setting the course for the success the organization has today.  She remains passionate about the work of the United Way and has remained a mentor and faithful donor to our organization.

On this day, however, Deb and her husband Jerry, begin a new and exciting chapter for our United Way.  They are stepping out to become the first official members of this prestigious society by contributing $10,000.00 to the United Way and pledging to continue that level of giving for five years.

Deb’s husband, Jerry, was introduced to her during her work with the United Way and learned throughout their marriage how important the United Way’s mission is to his wife.  It is with this in mind that Jerry arranged today’s contribution in order for Deb to become the first active member of our de Tocqueville Society.  Deb will be honored both locally and by United Way Worldwide for her philanthropic leadership and for setting this standard of giving in our community.

The United Way of Southern West Virginia is proud to accept this donation of $10,000.00 that will be part of our 2010-2011 campaign.  More importantly, however, we are so honored that Deb and Jerry Swanson continue to support the mission of this organization as we work to bring positive change to our communities.

YOU can be part of improving the health, education and income of people in Southern West Virginia because UNITED, we stand, UNITED, we elevate.  UNITED, we can change what we see in our world.
